Dear Viking Community,

Thank you for the significant contribution you have made to your child’s education as we started this school year in distance learning. As educators, we recognize what an extraordinary gift it is for us to work with your children. We also recognize that without your support at home, we would not be able to connect with our students each day. We know you have had to place many aspects of your lives on hold to assist your children with logging on, staying focused, and completing/uploading work. Your support is greatly appreciated.

In this update, I will respond to some questions posed during the Back to School Night general meeting webinar, provide some preliminary information about NMUSD’s plans for students returning to school, and share some tips for accessing the live Music, PE, and Science Zoom sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions from the Back to School Night General Meeting Webinar:

Q: When will we receive more information about NMUSD’s plan for reopening school?

A: The NMUSD Board of Trustees will be meeting on Thursday, September 10 to discuss the district-wide plan for reopening schools in a hybrid model (Level 2). The current plans for reopening school are outlined under the next heading below.

Due to the evolving circumstances during this pandemic crisis and on-going negotiations with the NMUSD employee labor groups, the timeline and models that are presently being discussed are subject to change and/or adjustment.

Q: How prepared is Harbor View Elementary School to open for in-person instruction if Orange County is authorized to reopen public schools on September 22 (or any other date)?

A: All NMUSD elementary schools will follow a district-wide plan for reopening in a hybrid model of instruction. Once Orange County Schools are authorized to provide in-person instruction, Harbor View Elementary, along with all NMUSD schools, will need some additional days to prepare for the arrival of students. Pending approval from the State of California, NMUSD is tentatively planning to begin in-person instruction in a Level 2 model according to the following dates.

Preschool to 6th Grade Start Dates:

Tuesday, September 29, 2020: Preschool, TK – Grade 2, and special needs students receiving SDC services Thursday, October 1, 2020: Grades 3-6

Q: Will PE be physical activity or more Zoom lessons?

A: Our PE specialist, Mr. Gibson, is leading students in each grade level with live Zoom sessions for physical activity and additional activities they may complete at home on their own time.

Q: How do we reduce the amount of screentime for students during distance learning?

A: We all understand how important it is to limit the amount of time students spend using devices. The challenge during distance learning is that live interaction between teachers and students can only happen through a computer screen.

The instructional day during distance learning is designed to provide students with breaks from Zoom. When we return to in-person instruction, the amount of time students spend using devices each day will decrease.

Update on NMUSD’s plans for returning to in-person instruction:

With the publication of the NMUSD Board agenda for Thursday, September 10, NMUSD has publicly shared a proposed plan for reopening schools for a hybrid model of in-person instruction (Level 2). The NMUSD Board of Trustees will determine whether the proposed plan will move forward or not. Additionally, the plan will be a negotiated item with the employee labor groups in NMUSD.

Pending approval from the State of California, NMUSD is tentatively planning to begin in-person instruction in a Level 2 model according to the following phases.

Preschool to 6th Grade Start Dates:

Tuesday, September 29, 2020: Preschool, TK – Grade 2, and special needs students receiving SDC services Thursday, October 1, 2020: Grades 3-6

The plan for reopening would include an AM/PM model where students will be designated into cohorts for on campus instruction half of the school day.

Instructional Model: Half Day Daily Hybrid – 2 Cohort AM/PM Model

  • Each cohort meets for in-person instruction either in the morning or afternoon for half day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Each cohort meets in-person in the morning for half day every other Wednesday.
  • For each half day when not on campus for in-person instruction, students are required to participate from home via asynchronous learning from their classroom teacher and independent learning.
  • Other instruction being planned are synchronous and asynchronous learning in areas such as PE, music and/or science, intervention/enrichment support and/or special education services if eligible.
  • Extended learning sessions on campus will not be provided at this time.
  • Bus service will be limited at this time. All students who are eligible and choose to use home to school transportation will be required to be assigned to the AM cohort. Face coverings are required for all bus passengers.
  • A systematic effort will be made to keep families in the same elementary AM/PM cohort.
  • Special Education SDC services will be full days except Wednesday half day.

Once plans are finalized with the NMUSD Board of Trustees and NMUSD employee labor groups, I will publish a date and time for a live Question and Answer session for parents. I know there are many questions about the plans for reopening schools. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

Tips for accessing live Music, PE, and Science Lessons via Zoom:

Students in grades TK-6 have Music, PE, and Science lessons scheduled each week. Your child’s teacher has shared information about when these live lessons occur each week.

Some families have encountered an error message when logging into live sessions for Music, Science, and PE. Please follow the instructions below when logging in to your child’s specialist class each week.

Navigate your web browser to Zoom Website. From an NMUSD Chromebook, this website is accessible from NMUSD student bookmarks. Please click the following link for screenshots about how to login using the NMUSD Google Account. Using A Chromebook: How to Login to Zoom with NMUSD Authenticated Login

Thank you for partnering with us in your child’s education.
