Congratulations Kerrie Torres

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) announces the promotion of Kerrie Torres, a seasoned education leader with more than 27 years of experience, to Deputy Superintendent, Secondary Education. She has been an integral part of NMUSD since joining the district in 2021 as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, demonstrating exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to staff collaboration and student success.

Under her leadership, the district’s secondary education programs have flourished, increasing opportunities for students to explore their interests and excel. This includes expanding elective offerings at TeWinkle Middle School and reimagining alternative education programs to better serve diverse student needs. She has also played a pivotal role in strengthening academic pathways, expanding college and career readiness initiatives, and enhancing student support systems districtwide.

Beyond her contributions in secondary education, Torres has also undertaken the oversight of the district’s student services division. In this expanded role, she has been instrumental in enhancing programs that promote student safety, wellness, and attendance, further strengthening the district’s commitment to supporting every student.

Her commitment to mentoring educators and administrators, along with her focus on professional learning, further strengthens our district’s ability to provide high-quality education.

“She's a valued leader in Newport-Mesa, driving student achievement through collaboration and comprehensive support. I am confident that her dedication and vision will continue to elevate our district and enrich the educational journey of every student we serve,” said Superintendent Dr. Wesley Smith.

Before joining NMUSD, Torres served as assistant superintendent of K-12 education services for Brea Olinda Unified School District and executive director of secondary education for Orange Unified School District. She also has experience as a secondary principal, assistant principal, and science teacher.

Torres received her bachelor of arts in biological science from California State University, Los Angeles, and her master of educational leadership from the University of La Verne. She is expected to defend her doctoral dissertation in educational leadership later this month, a significant milestone in her commitment to advancing education and leadership excellence.
